Racist rampage murderer sentenced to death

Dylann Storm Roof, the American white supremacist man convicted of opening fire on a group of black people on June 17, 2015, at a Charleston church has been sentenced to death.

According to reports, Roof was condemned to death on Tuesday by a unanimous jury.

The jury deliberated for three hours, before reaching a decision.

This makes Roof the first person to receive a death sentence for federal hate crimes.

He will be killed by lethal injection.

On Tuesday, Roof, who acted as his own counsel, said in his closing statement; "I have the right to ask you to give me a life sentence, but I'm not sure what good it would do anyway".

Roof is accused of murdering nine African-Americans at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church.

One person was injured in the shooting.

Roof wrote in a manifesto, six weeks after his arrest, “I would like to make it crystal clear I do not regret what I did. I am not sorry. I have not shed a tear for the innocent people I killed.”

“I do feel sorry for the innocent white children forced to live in this sick country and I do feel sorry for the innocent white people that are killed daily at the hands of the lower race. I have shed a tear of self-pity for myself. I feel pity that I had to do what I did in the first place. I feel pity that I had to give up my life because of a situation that should never have existed.”
